Editor's Review:

Finding an au pair (or becoming one and moving away from home), can be a stressful experience. There are a myriad of papers to fill out, laws to understand and travel issues to get your mind around. AuPairCare.com takes away this hassle by linking au pairs with host families and sorting out the details in between.

Sounds great, right? Well in theory it is an easy way to find an au pair or host family and to start that new and exciting chapter in life. But there are a few issues...

The primary issue is that AupairCare.com’s service doesn’t come cheap. You can save money if you manage to pay for the service during a sale, otherwise the fees (mostly paid by the host family) are almost $8000. If you’re only hoping to have an au pair for one year then this is a huge amount, particularly as you still have to pay the au pair and set aside a room in your house for them to live in. But let’s assume you’ve plenty of money and feel that this service is worth it; after all you’ll encounter costs whether or not you use a paid service such as this. Well the service available on this site seems very professional and well conceived. There’s also plenty of support from the site’s team, including call centres. They provide free international calls for au pair interviews and a substantial amount of information on moving abroad or having a new person come to stay with you. Aupaircare.com has a long history of providing this service (established in 1989) so they know what they’re doing.

You might have noticed that this site doesn’t receive a particularly glowing record for the number of au pairs it has on its books. Having only “hundreds” of au pairs available means it fails in comparison to other sites, but then again numbers aren’t everything. This is a professional service that wants to match the best person to the best home, not a popularity competition. Still, the more choices that are available the better because a larger list of employees would mean a better chance of finding someone to suit your needs.

AuPairCare isn’t a bad service, in fact it seems to be a successful and professional one. However, the site is let down by its low au pair numbers and high costs. If the costs are within your budget (there are payment plans available to help with this) then it’s certainly worth signing up and searching for an au pair. If you’re an au pair then the likelihood is that the host family is going to have a good income, so there is a degree of job security.
